Telecom IPO Readiness: What Operators Need to Know Before They Prepare to List

Most IPO readiness guides focus on financial reporting and governance. The commercial dimension — what the business needs to demonstrate before and during the capital markets process — is what most operators underestimate. I led the commercial function through a frontier market telecom IPO in Southeast Asia.

Five Commercial Dimensions

1

The commercial narrative matters as much as the financial model

Investors buy a commercial story. Answer: the growth model, the durable competitive position, and the management track record.

2

Revenue predictability is a different standard

Capital markets investors expect the commercial team to have anticipated a miss before the quarter closed. Build forecasting rigour 18–24 months out.

3

The core revenue story must withstand scrutiny

Mix shift, high-value churn, ARPU erosion — fix structural issues before the process begins, not during it.

4

Revenue diversification matters to valuation

Enterprise, managed services, and platform revenue command premium multiples — but must reflect genuine 18–24 months of development.

5

The commercial leadership narrative

As carefully developed as the CFO and CEO narratives — sophisticated investors interrogate it directly.

How the Listing Environment Differs

SGX (Singapore)
Most sophisticated institutional base. Commercial narrative needs matching depth of interrogation.
Bursa Malaysia
Significant retail participation — narrative must work at institutional depth and retail accessibility.
IDX Indonesia
Largest addressable market, highest commercial complexity — regional variation within the country matters.
Frontier exchanges (CSX, Laos, Myanmar)
Thin domestic institutional bases — narrative designed for regional/international investors. Hybrid structures expand accessible investor base.

The Readiness Timeline

18–24
months before listing: commercial forecasting upgrade and revenue quality audit must begin.
6–12
months before listing: commercial narrative and leadership narrative development.
